The D. Zameiro bridge is one of several crossing structures that have existed on the Ave River throughout history. Its origin must be in Roman times. At that time, the bridge was an integral part of Via Veteris (designated in the Middle Ages by Karraria Antiqua), a road that, from Porto, connected to Maia and Rates, crossing the Ave river on the D. Zameiro bridge and the Este river on the bridge of Arcos.
It is one of the links between Porto and Galicia, the Camino de Santiago.
