Porto is the headquarters and capital of a large Portuguese metropolitan area: the Porto Metropolitan Area, which groups 18 municipalities with 1,722,374 inhabitants (2018) in an area of 2,040 km². It has a population density of close to 844 inhabitants / km². Porto and the Porto Metropolitan Area constitute the structural nucleus of the North Region, which has an area of 21,278 km² (24% of the Mainland) and a population of 3,689,609 inhabitants (2011), corresponding to 37% of Mainland Portugal, therefore, it is the most populous and largest region in the country and the region where most small and medium-sized companies are located, and it is also the one that contributes the most to national exports, being the only region that exports more than it imports. The North Region produces 40% of the country's added value and has 50% of industrial employment, with an import coverage rate for exports of 129%, against the national average of 74%. This region is served by two important infrastructures: the Port of Leixões, which represents 25% of Portuguese international trade, and the Airport of Porto.
The municipalities of Espinho, Santa Maria da Feira, Arouca, São João da Madeira, Oliveira de Azeméis and Vale de Cambra, municipalities in the Porto Metropolitan Area, despite belonging to the Aveiro District, have always had a strong socio-economic connection to the area urban area of Porto, in addition to the territorial proximity to the city of Porto and its identity framework in the municipalities of the District of Porto.
