It is the seat of the municipality of Lousada, with a total area of 96.08 km2, 47,364 inhabitants in 2021 and a population density of 493 inhabitants per km2, subdivided into 15 parishes. The municipality of Lousada is a heavily industrialized municipality, particularly in the textile and clothing industry. However, this fact does not prevent it from still having a profoundly agricultural nature, especially in the field of green wines and dairy products, with the existence of several agro-industrial companies that are quite technologically developed.

Economy
Integrated in a very fertile area for agricultural activity, Lousada first developed activities related to agriculture and livestock, which are at the basis of the county's economic development, including being the only economic sector represented in the coat of arms of the county, with corn and vineyards. Other important products are rye, beans, melons and potatoes. Cattle raising is also typical, which is mainly done for the production of milk.
In industry, the most developed sectors are footwear, clothing, furniture, civil construction and sawmills. Of these, the Clothing industry stands out, providing 46.3% of work in Lousada.
As for the tertiary sector, commerce and services, banking services and insurance companies stand out. This is, as can be seen in neighboring municipalities and even in the country, the fastest growing sector in recent years.

The municipality of Lousada is divided into 15 parishes:
Aveleda; Caíde de Rei; Cernadelo e Lousada (São Miguel e Santa Margarida); Cristelos, Boim e Ordem; Figueiras e Covas; Lodares; Lustosa e Barrosas (Santo Estêvão); Macieira; Meinedo; Nespereira e Casais; Nevogilde; Silvares, Pias, Nogueira e Alvarenga; Sousela; Torno; Vilar do Torno e Alentém.
