Alfena is a Portuguese city located in the sub-region of the Metropolitan Area of Porto, belonging to the North region and the district of Porto. It has an urban area of 15.70 km2, 14,439 inhabitants in 2021, and a population density of 919 inhabitants per km2.
The city of Alfena belongs to the municipality of Valongo, and being constituted by the parish with the same name.
It is bordered, to the northeast, by the parish of Água Longa, in the municipality of Santo Tirso, to the southeast by Valongo, to the southwest by Ermesinde, both in the same municipality and to the northwest by Folgosa, in the municipality of Maia.

The parish is divided into 21 places: Aldeia Nova (and Santeiros), Baguim (and Fontinha), Barreiro (from Baixo and de Cima), Cabeda, Codiceira, Costa, Ferraria, Gandra, Igreja (and Vila), Lombelho, Outeiro, Pedrouços, Punhete, Reguengo, Ribeiro, Rua, Transleça, Trás-do-Casal, Várzea, Vilar (and Telheiras) and Xisto (and Outeirinho).

Currently, the main communication routes in the city of Alfena are the N 105, from Porto to Guimarães, and the N105-1 from Ermesinde to Alfena, where both cross the urban center of the city.

Alfena is in a privileged location, in terms of the road network, through the A 41 (former IC24) the inhabitants of Alfena can reach the city of Porto in a few minutes. Alfena is also served by other important roads such as the A 3 that connects Braga to Porto, the A 28 that connects Viana do Castelo to Matosinhos, the Via Norte, and the A 42 that connects Alfena to the cities of Paços de Ferreira, Felgueiras, Chaves and Vila Real.
Of great use, but of a somewhat secondary level, we have the Valongo – Cabeda road (M607) and the road that connects Alfena to São Romão (N318), allowing you to reach other directions.

Industries
The city has evolved at a very fast pace.
In the south of the city, there is the Industrial Zone of Alfena I, with four industrial sectors.
In the northern part of the city, the creation of the Industrial Zone of Alfena II is foreseen (is being studied), covering the parishes of Água Longa and Sobrado.
This is due to the fact that Alfena is only 12 kilometers from Porto, being a great asset to locate companies within its limits, and creating new jobs. The industry location is diverse and there are numerous warehouses in the industrial zones.
Alfena is today an important economic and industrial center in the municipality of Valongo and in the north of Portugal.
